About this component
The VDP renders the tile planes and sprites from 64 KB of VRAM, and holds the colour and vertical-scroll RAM internally. It also carries the Master System-style SN76489 PSG and supports Master System video modes for backwards compatibility. Japanese VA0 boards carry a small daughterboard on the VDP to work around early manufacturing faults. No public datasheet exists; replacement needs a donor chip. Part variants: Discrete 315-5313 or 315-5313A (and 315-5313A-01) on Model 1 up to VA6.8. From VA7 onward the VDP is inside the FC1004-family ASIC (315-5487, 315-5660, 315-5700, 315-5708), Toshiba 315-5685/315-5786 on Model 2 VA2/VA2.3, and 315-5960/315-6123 on the last Model 2 and Genesis 3.
Graphics processor driving the video output.
